Great American ProgramAll Fifth Graders will be participating in the “Great American Award” program this year. The “Great American Award” program fits into our curriculum beautifully because so many of our Social Studies objectives relate to American history. This program was established by a teacher at Andrew J. Mitchell Elementary School in Boulder City in 1989, and it is very popular with the students, parents and teachers. This award will be given to all fifth graders who successfully complete the following requirements:
The students in Tracks 1, 2, 4 & 5 have until May 29, 2009, to complete these requirements, and Track 3 has until June 19, 2009. Individual classroom teachers will let their students know when they can sign-up and complete any of the requirements. Students may attempt the requirements in any order, and there is no limit on the number of tries to complete each item. We will honor the students who achieve the “Great American Award” at their end-of-the-year awards program. Parents will be notified in advance. Attached you will find a packet of materials so that you, the parents, can begin working with your child. We encourage all Fifth Graders to take this opportunity to expand their “Great American” knowledge! So far, Mason A. has earned this award. Will you add your name to the list, too?
Honor RollEach trimester awards are given for all A's, A's & B's, and Perfect Attendance.
Golden RuleMr. Paquette, our principal, awards certificates to students who demonstrate the Golden Rule in their classrooms and around the school. This is given to students who "Treat others the way they want to be treated." This means students who respect their classmates, who are helpful, who try hard in class, who are kind, etc. These wonderful students should certainly be honored for their great behavior toward others. Check back here to see who earns this award in our class this year.
Accelerated Reader ProgramStudents participate in the Accelerated Reader Program by reading books listed in the AR website and taking the online comprehension tests for the book. (Tests are only available from school computers.) Students take an initial placement test, called a STAR test, to establish their reading level. Then students are assigned a range for their reading level and a point goal for the trimester. Students should strive to reach their point goals while maintaining an 85% average on the reading tests. Each test passed earns points for the student. Rewards will be given for students who make progress towards their goal and beyond. Check back here to see which students meet their goals each trimester.

MyTechyTeacher.com recently received the "Real Treasure Award" for website design from www.MyFunTeacher.com. I am so honored and excited. Karen Powell, the teacher who operates that site, has really been an inspiration to me. I've always liked her site design, and she helps me to see what's possible. Thanks, Karen. The "Real Treasure Award" is awarded to websites that meet the following criteria:
