leaf Class Schedule leaf

Our schedule for Specials will be different each time a track goes out on break this year. The schedule will be posted in the classroom when it becomes available. (It's important to know what days we have P.E. so students wear tennis shoes on those days.)

leaf Attendance/Absence Notes leaf

If your child is absent, you need to send a written note to school explaining the absence to have it excused. No verbal or phone call notices will be accepted to excuse an absence. If you e-mail me, I can print that out for the office to have a record. Please put the student ID number on all absence notes. School policy requires that notes must be turned in by parents within 3 days of absence.

Planner

leaf Planners leaf

Students in 5th grade are required to use a planner (agenda) to record their homework daily and any long-term projects. Planners should be filled out every day and signed by parent every night, verifying that all homework has been complete. Planners will be checked on a regular basis for proper completion, including parent signatures. Completion of planners is part of the responsibility grade. (Planners are also required in middle school so it is good for students to get into this habit.)

leaf Grading & Progress Reports leaf

Progress Reports will be sent home approximately every two weeks, with the first one being at week three in each trimester. Parents should review these with their child. Please sign and return these to school the next day. If you have any questions about your child's progress, please contact me through the school or email me. Note that the first progress report of each trimester does not include very many grades, so it typically is not the best evaluation of how your child is doing. Do address any concerns with your child and encourage him/her to make up any missing assignments.

ParentLink allows parents to logon and see their child's grades for individual assignments and overall in each subject. This service is up and running. Parents were mailed letters in mid-October with passwords. If you have not received yours, please contact the school office.

leaf Rules & Expectations leaf

Our classroom utilizes the following rules to ensure that we have a classroom where everyone is respected.

  1. Listen carefully and follow directions.
  2. Work quietly. Do not disturb others.
  3. Respect others. Be kind with your words & actions.
  4. Raise your hand to ask questions.
  5. Leave your seat only when necessary.
  6. Complete all assignments neatly and on time.

Excellent Behaviors
Students should always be on their best behavior at school and in the classroom. Students should begin the day by sharpening a couple pencils and getting to work immediately on their morning work. Sharpening should happen first thing in the morning and right after lunch so that students aren't interrupting instruction later. Students are encouraged to raise their hand and wait quietly to be called upon. This ensures that all students have a chance to be heard. Students should wait at their seat patiently for help, because I’m often helping others. I will get to everyone as quick as I can. As a class, we need to walk in a quiet, straight line in the hallways. This provides less disruption to other classes we are passing. To make sure we are as productive as possible in our class, we need to transition quietly between activities, turning in papers and getting out materials for the next lesson. Another time-saver is lining up quickly and quietly to go to other locations. On-task behavior is always appreciated and rewarded often with team points. Students will be given two bathroom breaks each day: right after/before Specials and shortly after lunch. They can also use the restroom during recess/lunch. Any other time during the day should be for emergencies only.

Inappropriate Behaviors
While I always hope that every student will be on their best behavior every day, I know that I can’t expect each day to be perfect. For those times when inappropriate classroom behaviors need to be dealt with, the following color card system will be in place. Students begin each day with a green card displayed and will turn over their cards when they receive a warning. Warnings will be given for things like: off-task behaviors, disturbing other classmates, being disrespectful to teacher or classmates, calling out answers without raising hand or waiting to be called on, and being out of their seat without permission.

When an inappropriate behavior is acknowledged, students will receive a:

1.  Verbal Warning
      (Turn Green card to Yellow.)

2.  Classroom Consequence
(Turn card to Orange. Time out to complete think sheet and discuss with teacher.)

3.  Communication with Parent
(Turn card to Red. Planner stamped with “Warning—Inappropriate Behavior”
and a note goes home regarding behavior to be signed by parent.)

4.  Parent Conference with Teacher
(Turn card to Purple. Student calls parent for immediate conference regarding behavior.)

5.  Student Conference with Administrator
(Turn card to Blue. Student referred to office for immediate conference regarding behavior.)

Students will have a Weekly Behavior Log attached to the front cover of their student planners. On Fridays it will be filled out with the students' behavior for the week. Parents should initial this Behavior Log on a regular basis to indicate that they've seen it and discussed any frequent problem behaviors with their child.

Rewards for Students
Students who stay on Green all week will participate in Learning Links on Friday and get to choose from several rewards, including 5 minutes of free computer time (to be used after SuccessMaker), the use of a pillow for the day, or a homework pass for 2 free answers. Students who get no more than 5 warnings (yellow) during the whole year will earn a pizza party at the end of the year with Mrs. Crawford.

Earn Team Points
The class is divided into six teams based upon seat groupings. Points are earned when the whole team has their homework done, various good behaviors, on-task behavior, quick transitions between lessons, cleaning up at the end of day, etc. These are given at Mrs. Crawford’s discretion. The Winning team for the week chooses a prize from the Treasure Chest and will have the first choice of games or activities for Learning Links.

Classroom Point Rewards
Students also earn Classroom points for larger rewards. They earn 1 point for walking in the halls silently, when no warnings are given all day to any students, when the whole class has their homework done for any subject, perfect attendance days, and when the class receives a compliment from a teacher or administrator. For every 25 points they earn, they will receive a "hidden treasure" buried on the pirate islands as the back of the classroom.

I look forward to having a wonderful year in our classroom with everyone working to the best of their abilities in an environment where they feel welcome, safe, and happy. Let’s make it the best year you’ve ever had in school. We’ll learn lots and have fun doing it.

leaf Volunteers leaf

Volunteers are always welcome at Forbuss Elementary. If you would like to come and help out in our class, just let me know.
I can always use assistance with sorting papers, making copies, assisting with special projects, helping with hands-on
science activities, practicing math facts with students, or discussing books that students are reading. If you can help by putting items or booklets together at home, sometime there is a need for that also. Just let me know what you have time for.
